The East End Historic District covers 445 acres and about 2,200 buildings, the most of any federally listed historic district in New York, and most of it is brick and frame rowhouses built between the 1880s and the 1930s. Many have been restored in the past decade, and many more are mid-restoration, which is usually when the wiring question comes up. One recent project turned 15 vacant buildings, most built between 1880 and 1910, into 45 apartments, each of them needing a new electrical system.
Behind the plaster we find knob and tube, cloth-covered cable, ungrounded outlets and services that were never meant to run a modern kitchen and heat pumps. Newburgh is also on a different utility than most of the county: Central Hudson serves the city rather than Orange and Rockland, so meter and service work is coordinated with them. Since December 31, 2025, permitted work follows the 2023 NEC.

Newburgh questions
We plan runs through floors, closets and existing chases and open small access points rather than whole walls, so restoration work is protected.
Central Hudson, not Orange and Rockland. We coordinate the disconnect and reconnect with them.
Often, usually mixed with later wiring. We test each circuit to map what is still live before pricing the replacement.
They can. Anything visible from the street, such as a new mast or exterior conduit, is worth checking with the city before work starts.
