Generator Transfer Switch and Interlock Kit Installation in New York
A portable generator is only useful if it can reach the circuits you need without feeding power back up the street. We fit a listed interlock or a transfer switch, mount an inlet outside, and label everything so it works in the dark.
- Calls answered 24/7
- Listed for your panel
- No backfeed to the utility

- Panel checked for a listed interlock
- Inlet box placed where the generator will sit
- Circuits labeled for storm use
We install interlocks and inlets for panels from Square D, Siemens and Eaton, and connect portable and standby units from Generac and Kohler.
A generator interlock is a sliding plate that makes it physically impossible to turn on the main breaker and the generator breaker at the same time, so a portable generator in Warwick or anywhere else can power the panel without backfeeding the utility line. It must be listed for the exact panel model, and it pairs with an outdoor inlet box and a matching cord.
Rather ask a person?(929) 755-0293What the job involves
The goal is simple: generator power into your panel, utility power locked out while it runs. The interlock plate or a transfer switch does the locking; the inlet box outside gives the cord somewhere safe to plug in, so nobody runs a cord through a window.
We check the panel make, model and spare spaces first, because an interlock only works with the kit made for that panel. Then we size the generator breaker to the generator's output, place the inlet where the unit will run, away from doors and windows, and label the circuits you will switch on during an outage. If you would rather not run a generator by hand at all, a standby unit with automatic transfer is the other route.

What sets the cost of a generator connection
Most connection jobs are modest; these details move them.
- Listed kit availabilityCommon panels have kits; older or rare panels may need a transfer switch instead.
- Panel spacesA full panel may need a tandem swap or a small subpanel.
- Distance to the inletA longer run from panel to inlet adds wire and conduit.
- Generator sizeA 50 amp inlet and cord cost more than a 30 amp setup.
- Labeling and extrasCircuit labels and a power-restored indicator are small but worth it.
Interlock, manual switch or automatic
| Factor | Interlock kit | Manual transfer switch | Automatic standby |
|---|---|---|---|
| Generator | Portable | Portable | Permanent standby |
| Circuit choice | Any breaker, chosen at the time | Fixed set wired to the switch | Whole home or preset loads |
| Needs someone home | Yes | Yes | No |
| Panel requirement | Listed kit for that panel | Space to feed the switch | Transfer switch and pad |
Most Orange County homeowners with a portable generator end up with an interlock. The automatic route is a different project and a different budget.
Connecting it yourself versus having us do it
| Task | Doing it yourself | With us |
|---|---|---|
| Backfeeding through an outlet | Can energize the street line and injure line workers | Never done; the interlock prevents it |
| Choosing a kit | Generic plates often fit badly or are not listed | Kit listed for your exact panel |
| Breaker and inlet sizing | Easy to mismatch generator, cord and breaker | Matched to the generator's output |
| Permit and inspection | Often skipped | Filed where the jurisdiction requires it |
Running cords from a generator to individual appliances is fine. Anything that connects the generator to the house wiring belongs to an electrician.
Three ways to connect a portable generator
Portable Generator Interlock Kit

The interlock is the most common setup for portable generators. It mounts on the panel cover, uses one breaker as the generator input, and blocks the main whenever that breaker is on. You choose which circuits to run by switching breakers on and off. It is simple and robust, and it needs only a couple of open spaces in the panel. The one requirement is a kit listed for that panel; a generic plate cut to fit is not acceptable, and inspectors check the label.
Manual Transfer Switch
A manual transfer switch is a small separate panel next to the main one, with a switch for each circuit you want on backup: furnace, well pump, refrigerator, a few lights. During an outage you flip those switches to generator. It suits panels with no listed interlock or no free spaces, and it keeps the choice of circuits fixed, which some owners prefer when a neighbor or a relative might be the one operating it during a storm. It costs more than an interlock and takes more wall space.
Inlet Box and Cord Setup

The inlet box is the outdoor connection point, rated to match the generator: commonly a 30 amp or a 50 amp twist-lock. We mount it where the generator will actually sit, far enough from doors, windows and vents that exhaust stays outside, and supply or recommend a cord of the right gauge and length. A cord with a plug on both ends plugged into a wall outlet is dangerous and is never a substitute, however common it is in garages.
Why Warwick houses ask for this
Around Warwick, and out toward Bellvale and Greenwood Lake, homeowners regularly ask for an inline and interlock kit next to a garage panel, often in a hurry before a storm weekend. Work outside New York City follows the state code, which moved to the 2023 edition of the national electrical code on December 31, 2025, so a new interlock installation there is permitted and inspected under that edition.

Generator connection questions
Sending generator power back through the house into the utility line, which can injure line workers.
Yes, when it is listed for your panel and installed with a properly sized generator breaker.
Often yes, if the generator can handle the pump's starting load.
Outside, away from doors, windows and vents, where the inlet is placed.
Usually yes; the local building department decides, and we file where required.
Call as early as you can; listed kits are sometimes back-ordered.
One matched to the inlet and the generator's rating; we tell you which.
