Light Fixture and Chandelier Installation in New York
Most fixture problems come from what the fixture hangs on. We check the box, the ceiling and the wiring behind it before the new light goes up, and support heavy pieces the way the code and the ceiling require.
- Calls answered 24/7
- Box and support checked
- LED-compatible dimming

- Box rating and ceiling checked
- Fixture assembled, supported and wired
- Dimmer matched to the new lamps
Installing a light fixture in a New York home starts with the ceiling or wall box: a standard fixture box supports up to 50 pounds, and anything heavier needs support independent of the box unless the box is listed for the weight. Older plaster ceilings often have shallow pancake boxes, so a heavy chandelier usually means a new brace first.

The visible part is quick. The work that matters happens above the canopy: whether the box is fastened to framing or just to lath, whether it is rated for the weight, whether the wires behind it are sound, and whether the circuit is on a dimmer that suits the new lamps.
Prewar ceilings add their own problems, from plaster that crumbles around a new opening to boxes buried in old medallions. We deal with those before the fixture goes up, assemble it on site, and hang it level and centered. If you are replacing several fixtures with a planned layout, recessed lighting may be part of the same visit.

What changes the cost of hanging a fixture
The ceiling and the fixture weight matter more than the fixture count.
- Fixture weightHeavy pieces need a brace or independent support.
- Box conditionLoose or shallow boxes are replaced before hanging.
- Ceiling heightStairwells and double-height rooms need more equipment.
- New locationNo existing box means fishing wire and patching.
- AssemblyCrystal and multi-arm fixtures take time to assemble.
Hanging it yourself versus calling us
| Task | Doing it yourself | With us |
|---|---|---|
| Light fixture on a sound box | Manageable with the breaker off | Done with wiring checked |
| Heavy chandelier | Box may not carry the weight | Braced or independently supported |
| Brittle old wiring | Crumbles when moved | Repaired or replaced at the box |
| Dimmer and LEDs | Flicker and buzz are common | Compatible dimmer fitted |
A light fixture on a solid, grounded box is a reasonable homeowner job. Anything heavy, overhead in a stairwell, or on old wiring is where people get hurt.
Three kinds of fixture job
Chandeliers and Heavy Pendants

Chandeliers and heavy pendants are where support matters. A standard fixture box is rated for up to 50 pounds; heavier fixtures need a brace fastened to framing or an independent support. Before hanging, we find the joist or install a brace, confirm the height over a table or through a stairwell, and adjust chain or rod length on site. Crystal chandeliers are assembled and cleaned on a drop cloth, then hung, not the other way around, and the dimmer is checked with the actual lamps.
Sconces and Vanity Lights
Wall sconces need boxes at the right height and spacing, which often means new boxes rather than the ones already in the wall. Vanity lights are placed for faces, beside or above the mirror, and in bathrooms they must suit a damp location. When a sconce is going where no box exists, we fish the wire from the nearest suitable source and patch the opening. Paired sconces are measured so they sit level and symmetric, and plug-in sconces can be converted to hardwired ones.
Replacing Fixtures on Old Boxes

Swapping a fixture in an older home often reveals brittle cloth wiring or a box that is not grounded. We cut back damaged insulation, add heat-shrink or replace the short run where needed, and ground the fixture where a ground path exists. If the old box is loose or too shallow for the new canopy, we replace it. Modern LED fixtures run cool, but they still need a sound connection and a box that holds the canopy flat against the ceiling.
What a fixture visit includes
- Box rating and fastening checked
- Brace or independent support where the weight needs it
- Old wiring inspected and repaired at the box
- Fixture assembled on a drop cloth
- Hung level, centered and at the agreed height
- Dimmer checked or replaced for LED compatibility
- Old fixture packed or removed as you prefer
Fixtures under the newer city codes
New York City now works under the 2025 Electrical Code, in force since December 21, 2025, and its 2025 Energy Conservation Code was set for enforcement from March 30, 2026. A straight fixture swap is rarely affected, but lighting inside a filed renovation increasingly is, because energy rules shape how much lighting power a space may use. That is one more reason LED fixtures and compatible dimmers are now the default choice.
