Fuse Box to Breaker Panel Conversion in New York

A fuse box that keeps blowing is doing its job, but it is doing it with 1940s parts. We replace it with a breaker panel sized for today's loads, check every circuit as it moves over, and file the work.

  • Calls answered 24/7
  • Every circuit checked in the move
  • Insurer paperwork provided

Short answer

Converting a fuse box to a breaker panel in New York replaces the screw-in or cartridge fuse panel with a modern breaker panel, and often raises an old 60 amp service at the same time. National 2026 guides put same-size panel replacements at about $1,200 to $2,500, with service upgrades costing more.

What the job involves

What a fuse box conversion involves

Fuses are not dangerous in themselves; the danger is what happens around them. A 15 amp circuit with a 30 amp fuse screwed in because the right one kept blowing will overheat its wire without ever tripping. Old fuse panels also rarely have room for the circuits a modern kitchen needs, and many insurers ask about them.

The conversion starts with the service: many fuse panels sit on 60 amp service, which is too small for central air, an electric dryer and a modern kitchen together. We decide with you whether to replace at the same size or upgrade, move each circuit to a correctly sized breaker, and fix what the move uncovers. For bigger jumps in capacity, see panel upgrades.

What moves the price

What moves the cost of a fuse box conversion

Whether the service changes decides most of it.

  • Same size or upgradeA 60 amp service moving to 100 or 200 amps adds utility work.
  • Circuit conditionOversized fuses often hide overheated wire that needs repair.
  • Panel locationMoving the panel to a code-compliant spot adds wiring.
  • Number of circuitsMore circuits mean more breakers and more testing.
  • Building approvalsApartment conversions go through the building.
Common versions of this job

Two kinds of fuse box job

Screw-In Fuse Panel Replacement

New breaker panel installed where the fuse box used to be

Screw-in fuse panels are the most common type we replace, usually with a few cartridge fuses for the main and a range. We remove the panel, install a breaker panel in the same location or a better one nearby, and land each circuit on a breaker matched to its wire. Oversized fuses are a common find, and so are circuits that feed more rooms than anyone realized. The new directory is written from testing, not from the old handwritten labels, which are rarely accurate after decades.

Planning range (national sources, 2026): $1,200 to $2,500. Coastal-market pricing and building access change the figure; this is a planning band, never a quote.

60 Amp Service Modernization

Old 60 amp service next to a new meter base

A 60 amp service was standard when the house had a refrigerator, a radio and a few lamps. Today it limits almost everything: a heat pump, an EV charger, an induction range and even a window AC in every bedroom. Modernizing means a new meter base, service conductors and a larger panel, with the utility disconnecting and reconnecting the service. It costs more than a same-size swap, but it is the only way to add major loads safely, and it is usually cheaper done at the same time as the fuse box.

Planning range (national sources, 2026): $1,500 to $4,000. Coastal-market pricing and building access change the figure; this is a planning band, never a quote.

Local conditions

Where fuse boxes still turn up

Half of the city's housing is in Brooklyn and Queens, and small homes make up over a quarter of all units, which is where original fuse panels still turn up most. The city's 2025 Electrical Code also includes, for the first time, its own chapter on existing installations. That matters for a conversion, because the new panel is judged under current rules while the older circuits it feeds are handled under the existing-installation provisions, so we check both during the move.

Timing

How long you are without power

The conversion itself happens in one scheduled outage while the old panel comes out and the new one goes in. If the service is being upgraded too, the outage is set around the utility's disconnect, which we arrange once the filings are in. Circuits come back on one at a time as they are tested, so the kitchen and heat are restored before we leave.

What you will notice first

Signs the fuse box needs to go

  • Fuses blow regularly

Circuits are overloaded for how the home is used now.

  • Larger fuses than the wire allows

    A common and dangerous shortcut.

  • Coins or foil behind a fuse

    Bypassing protection entirely. Call now.

  • Warm fuse holders

Loose or corroded connections in the panel.

  • An insurer asking about fuses

    Many carriers want breakers.

  • No room for a new circuit

The panel cannot grow with the house.
