Electrical Panel Replacement in New York
Some panels need replacing not because they are small, but because they cannot be trusted. We replace failing, damaged and badly placed panels with new listed equipment, move every circuit across, and fix what the move uncovers.
- Calls answered 24/7
- Every circuit tested in the move
- Insurer paperwork provided

- Old panel and circuits assessed
- New listed panel installed and filed
- Circuits moved, labeled and inspected
Replacement panels we install include Square D, Siemens and Eaton, with breakers listed for each panel.
Electrical panel replacement in New York swaps a failing, damaged or problematic panel for a new listed one at the same or larger size, moving every circuit to a correctly matched breaker; national 2026 guides put same-size replacements at about $1,200 to $2,500. Federal Pacific, Zinsco and water-damaged panels are the most common reasons.

Replacement is different from an upgrade: the goal is trustworthy equipment, not more capacity, though many owners do both at once. Some older panel brands have long records of breakers that fail to trip, rust and water damage undermine any panel, and a panel in a closet or behind a washer may not meet clearance rules.
We assess the old panel and every circuit, install a new listed panel, and move each circuit to a breaker matched to its wire. Double taps, oversized breakers and damaged conductors are corrected in the move. If new loads are planned, sizing up at the same time is usually cheaper; see panel upgrades.

What drives the cost of a panel replacement
Location and circuit condition matter as much as the panel.
- Same size or largerAdding capacity brings service and utility work.
- RelocationMoving the panel extends every circuit.
- Circuit conditionDamaged conductors found in the move need repair.
- Water or heat damageMay extend beyond the panel to the feeder.
- Building accessApartment panels depend on the building's feeder route.
Replace at the same size or upgrade
| Factor | Same-size replacement | Replace and upgrade |
|---|---|---|
| What changes | Panel and breakers | Panel, often meter and service |
| Utility involvement | Usually not | Yes |
| Best for | Failing panels with enough capacity | Failing panels plus new loads planned |
| Planning range | About $1,200 to $2,500 nationally | About $1,500 to $4,000 nationally |
If a heat pump, EV charger or induction range is anywhere in the plan, upgrading during the replacement avoids paying for the panel work twice.
Three reasons panels get replaced
Federal Pacific and Zinsco Panel Replacement

Federal Pacific panels with Stab-Lok breakers have a long record, in independent testing, of breakers that fail to trip under overload, and many inspectors and insurers flag them on sight. Zinsco panels have breakers that can fuse to the bus bar. Replacement parts for both are scarce. We replace the whole panel rather than swapping breakers, test each circuit as it moves, and give you documentation for the insurer or buyer who raised the question in the first place.
Planning range (national sources, 2026): $1,200 to $2,500. Coastal-market pricing and building access change the figure; this is a planning band, never a quote.
Rusted or Water-Damaged Panel
Rust inside a panel usually means water has been reaching it, from a leaking pipe, a wet basement or condensation. Corroded bus bars and breakers do not hold connections reliably, and breakers exposed to water may not trip correctly. We replace the panel and breakers, fix or reroute the source of water where it is electrical, and where the location keeps flooding, move the panel higher. Photos of the damage go to you for any claim, together with a note on where the water came from.
Panel Relocation

Panels installed in closets, bathrooms, behind appliances or in spaces without working clearance are hard to reach in an emergency and may not meet code. A relocation moves the panel to a compliant spot, extends or replaces the circuits to reach it, and often pairs with a replacement since the old panel is coming out anyway. In apartments, relocation also depends on the building's feeder route, so we check that route with the managing agent and the building's engineer before planning anything.
Where panels sit, and who supplies them
In city flood zones, the building code expects electrical equipment at or above the design flood elevation, and about 71,000 properties sit in the one-percent flood zone, so a basement panel being replaced there is often moved up rather than swapped in place. Upstate, Orange County is split among several utilities, including Orange and Rockland, Central Hudson and NYSEG, and a replacement that touches the service is coordinated with whichever one serves the address.
How a panel replacement runs
Assess
Panel condition and every circuit checked.
Plan and file
Size and location decided, permit filed.
Replace
Power off, new panel installed.
Move circuits
Each one to a matched breaker, faults corrected.
Inspect and label
Inspection passed, tested directory written.
Signs the panel should be replaced
- Federal Pacific or Zinsco label
Brands with known breaker problems.
- Rust or water stains inside
Corrosion undermines every connection.
- Warm panel cover or breakers
Heat at the bus or a loose connection.
- Breakers that will not stay seated
Worn bus stabs.
- Scorch marks or a burning smell
Turn off the main if safe, and call.
- Panel in a closet or bathroom
Clearance and access problems.
