Switching from gas to induction in a New York apartment
The range is the easy part. The circuit is the project. A gas stove runs on a plain outlet; an induction range needs a 240-volt circuit of 40 or 50 amps, and in an older apartment the panel, the feeder and the building's rules decide how hard that is.

Switching to induction in a New York apartment usually takes a dedicated 240-volt circuit of 40 or 50 amps, a check that the apartment panel and feeder can carry it, and building approval in a co-op or condo. A basic 240-volt circuit with a short run costs about $250 to $800 in national 2026 guides; panel work, where needed, costs more.

A gas range draws almost nothing electrically; its outlet only powers the igniter, clock and oven light. A full-size induction range is the opposite: its nameplate commonly calls for a 40 or 50 amp circuit at 240 volts, the same class of circuit as an electric dryer or a Level 2 charger. That circuit has to come from somewhere, and in a prewar apartment the somewhere is often a small panel fed from the building's riser.
So the first question is not which range to buy but what the apartment can carry. A load calculation adds up what the unit already runs, such as air conditioners, a dishwasher and a microwave, then adds the range and compares the total with the apartment's feeder. If it fits, the job is usually one new circuit. If it does not, the options are a load-sharing device, a lower-power range, or a panel and feeder upgrade.
- Range nameplate: amperage and connection type
- Open spaces in the apartment panel for a two-pole breaker
- Size and condition of the apartment feeder
- Distance from the panel to the range
- Building rules for kitchen alterations
What the building will ask for
New York's 2023 all-electric buildings law targets new construction only; it does not affect existing buildings, and owners can keep existing gas stoves. That makes an induction switch in an older apartment a choice, and in a co-op or condo the board decides how that choice is made. Expect an alteration agreement, a certificate of insurance from the electrician, approved working hours and sometimes drawings for larger kitchen work.
The gas side is a separate trade. A plumber caps the gas line at the range, and some buildings want the cap inspected or documented. Coordinating the two so the old range comes out, the line is capped and the new circuit is ready on the same day keeps the kitchen out of action for as little time as possible.

What it costs
National 2026 guides put a basic 240-volt circuit with a short run and no panel work at about $250 to $800. New York jobs usually land toward the top of national ranges because labor and wiring methods cost more here: the city requires conduit or armored cable for nearly all wiring, which takes longer to install than the cable used in most of the country.
Where the panel is full or the feeder is undersized, the cost becomes a panel question. A 100 to 200 amp panel upgrade runs about $1,500 to $4,000 nationally before city premiums, and an apartment feeder replacement can need building and utility coordination. That is why the load calculation should come before the range is ordered.
| Scope | 2026 national range |
|---|---|
| Basic 240-volt circuit, short run | $250 to $800 |
| 100 to 200 amp panel upgrade | $1,500 to $4,000 |
| New York premium on labor | 20 to 40 percent above national |

Mistakes to avoid
Buying the range first is the most common one; the nameplate may call for a circuit the apartment cannot carry. Another is reusing an old electric range circuit without checking its size, age and receptacle type. And in co-ops, starting work before the alteration agreement is signed can stop a job halfway, with the gas already capped and no new circuit approved.

Induction switch questions
Not always; a load calculation on the apartment shows whether the existing panel and feeder can carry the range.
Yes. The state's all-electric law applies to new construction, not existing apartments.
Often a day when the panel has room, coordinated with the plumber who caps the gas.
Small 120-volt units exist, but full-size ranges need a 240-volt circuit.
In most co-ops and condos, yes; the alteration agreement comes first.
